Overview

Modern Satellite Communications (SatComms) vehicles play a critical role in enabling high-bandwidth video and data transmission from remote locations—whether for live broadcasting, emergency response, or secure communications. These specialist vehicles require advanced, self-sufficient electrical systems to support continuous operation in the field. Working in partnership with Babcock, Merlin Power was selected to design and deliver a bespoke power system for a next-generation SatComms van—helping to ensure reliable performance during extended off-grid deployments.

Project Details

Merlin Power was tasked with developing a complete, integrated electrical power system for the Satellite Comms vehicle. The system needed to deliver high-capacity power for the van’s sophisticated broadcast and satellite equipment, while supporting seamless integration with both onboard systems and external charging sources.

The Challenge

To support the advanced equipment within the SatComms van, the electrical system required a 38kWh 48V primary battery bank, a 4kWh 12V auxiliary system, 4kW 230V AC power, intelligent battery monitoring, and seamless charging via both external mains and onboard alternator sources. The system had to be compact, lightweight, and engineered for continuous, high-demand operation—while maintaining reliability in dynamic, mobile environments. Space constraints and system integration with specialist comms equipment added further complexity.

The Solution

Merlin Power developed a fully customised power system optimised for the van’s technical and operational requirements. Using 3D visualisation tools, the system was modelled and refined in collaboration with the client, ensuring rapid sign-off and efficient build. Key components included:

Merlin Power’s team built, installed, and commissioned the system on the vehicle—ensuring seamless integration with the van’s satellite, broadcast, and onboard control systems.

Our Take

“The electrical solution provided by the team at Merlin is one we’re very proud of. From the initial consultation and CAD design all the way through to the final installation, we are proud to have exceeded the client’s expectations. Another win for Merlin.”
