DEFENCE FAQs

Can Merlin’s systems meet MIL-STD / DEFSTAN?

Yes. Merlin Power had over three decades of experience designing electrical power systems that meet MIL-STD and DEF-STAN requirements. Our systems are fielded across a wide range of internationally recognised platforms, including Abrams, Bradley, AMPV, Stryker, Jackal, and specialist ambulance, fire, and police vehicles, as well as RNLI lifeboats.

How do you support/combat obsolescence?

Merlin Power provides product support for up to 15 years post-purchase. Obsolescence is managed through a structured Fit, Form, and Function (FFF) approach, ensuring that replacement components integrate seamlessly without impact to system performance or interfaces. This methodology, combined with our extensive industry knowledge, supplier relationships, and over 30 years of defence experience, enables us to proactively and effectively manage obsolescence throughout the product lifecycle.

What experience do you have with export controls or licensing?

Merlin has extensive practical experience in managing export controls and licensing requirements as part of our day-to-day operations.

We operate in accordance with UK export control regulations and regularly handle controlled and dual-use goods. Our team is experienced in applying for and administering export licences through the UK Government’s Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), part of the Department for Business & Trade (DBT). This includes managing Standard Individual Export Licences (SIELs), Open Individual Export Licences (OIELs), and the use of relevant Open General Export Licences (OGELs) where applicable.

We maintain robust internal compliance procedures covering product classification, end-user and end-use checks, record keeping, and shipment controls. Our export compliance systems are subject to audit by the Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), and we hold fully compliant status, demonstrating that our processes and controls meet UK Government regulatory standards.

How do we integrate with vehicle CAN-BUS / MIL-STD interfaces?

Yes, our products are CAN-enabled.

How does your business handle requests for UORs?

By combining 30+ years’ experience, the ability to adapt, secure ISO9001 operations and large stock holdings, Merlin Power consistently collapses delivery timelines and provides defence customers with the operational edge they need - exactly when they need it most.

Agility for urgent needs - With a team experienced in working with UORs, decisions are made quickly. Processes adapt to the project, not the other way around.

Integrated, ISO 9001-certified capability - Design, prototyping, build, and integration all happened in our secure Exeter facility, giving full control over quality and timelines.

Large stock holding - Holding critical components in-house removes delays from supply chains and obsolescence.

Highly responsive engineering capacity - Our legacy within the industry gives us access to a broad network of specialists, allowing rapid scaling when required.

Support through to deployment – We have experience assisting with factory acceptance testing, managed logistics and loading, and accepting free-issue equipment directly to our facilities.

This combination of capabilities allows the client to remain hands-off while still maintaining confidence in build quality, acceptance standards, and operational readiness.

What quality assurance steps do you take?

Merlin Power holds both ISO9001 and ISO14001 accreditation, guaranteeing quality control upon every project. We boast a <0.1% warranty returns rate on all defence projects.
