Overview
Anti-social behaviour (ASB) has become a growing concern across Nottinghamshire, with rising incidents of vandalism, disorder, and public disturbance putting community safety at risk. To strengthen their response and enhance public reassurance, Nottinghamshire Police sought a mobile, rapid-deployment CCTV vehicle that could monitor high-risk areas with minimal setup time and maximum visibility.

Project Details
Woodway Engineering took the lead on delivering a specialist surveillance vehicle, designed to meet the demanding requirements of frontline policing. The van was fitted with a Night Owl Predator mast system, paired with a 360 Vision camera and Veracity secure video transmission technology to provide real-time intelligence-gathering capability in the field.
To support these technologies, the vehicle needed a reliable off-grid power supply that could perform over extended deployments without reliance on external charging. That’s where Merlin Power came in. Working closely with Paul Watkins, Head of Installations at Woodway, we designed a robust battery and charging setup tailored to the vehicle’s high electrical demands.
The Challenge
As the vehicle integrated specialist CCTV, lighting, and communications technology, a bespoke vehicle conversion was required. The conversion required batteries that could handle these requirements and more, ensuring the vehicle could operate during long deployments with uninterrupted power.
The Solution
Merlin Power supplied a power system designed for endurance, performance, and safety using:
- 7 x Fullriver DC Series Deep-Cycle Batteries – delivering long-lasting, dependable energy for extended deployments.
- 1 x Merlin SmartBank PRO Split Charging System – an advanced stand-alone device that uses industry-accepted “best method” split charging with no voltage drop, no force-feeding, and the ability to share capacity between banks to extend run-times.
SmartBank PRO manages charging intelligently to support battery health and maximise uptime, while Fullriver deep-cycle batteries provide long-lasting energy storage for extended off-grid performance. Together, they deliver a robust power solution that enables the surveillance vehicle to operate independently — without compromising performance, endurance, or reliability.
The Outcome
With the electrical system installed and integrated, the CCTV van is now fully operational and already in service, helping Nottinghamshire Police monitor and deter ASB hotspots across the region. The combination of cutting-edge surveillance technology and resilient onboard power ensures the vehicle can be deployed quickly and remain in position for as long as the job demands.
