Full Throttle, Fitted as Standard: The High-Cranking Battery Behind the Ariel Atom and Nomad

You've probably seen the clip of Jeremy Clarkson's face rippling at the wheel of an Ariel Atom as he takes it round the Top Gear test track. It's about the best visual demonstration you'll find of how much speed and power these cars pack, with every component carefully selected to get the most out of them.

As of 2026, every new Ariel Atom and Nomad leaves the workshop with a Full Throttle battery fitted as standard. We're the UK's leading supplier of Full Throttle, and here's why it's earned a place in two of Britain's most extreme (and fun) cars.

What Ariel asks of a battery

Ariel builds lightweight, hand-assembled performance cars in Somerset. The Atom is a road-legal track machine with an exposed chassis. The Nomad takes that same thinking, but off-road.

Both cars ask a lot from the battery. There's constant vibration from a stiff chassis and a high-revving engine. There are cold mornings, hot pit lanes and, in the Nomad's case, mud, water and big hits. And the car still has to fire up first time, every time, sometimes after sitting for weeks between drives.

That's not a job for an ordinary starting battery.

Why Full Throttle is the best starting battery for the job

The Atom runs the Full Throttle FT230. The Nomad runs the FT410. Both are TPPL (thin plate pure lead) high-cranking batteries, and that construction is what makes the difference.

  • Thin plates, more power. Thinner plates mean more surface area inside the same case, so the battery delivers a huge burst of cranking current on demand.

  • Pure-lead cells. Pure lead resists corrosion and keeps internal resistance low, so power arrives quickly and consistently.

  • Built to take a beating. Tightly compressed cells with over-partition welded busbars, in a robust casing, shrug off the shock and vibration that kill ordinary batteries.

  • Holds its charge. Very low self-discharge means a car that's been sat for weeks at a time and still starts on the first turn.

That combination is exactly what you want in a high-performance starting battery.

Not just for ariel owners

The same batteries that start an Atom work anywhere you need serious cranking power, again and again. Track days and race cars, winches, compressors, off-road builds, classic and performance cars that sit between outings.

If you're after a high-cranking battery you can rely on and forget about once it's fitted, browse the Full Throttle range. Full Throttle batteries are a great, like-for-like drop-in replacement for many other popular battery brand sizes, get in touch and we'll help you pick the right size for your vehicle.
